[Solved] – WinPCap 4.12 install error

If you see this error, “A previous version of WinPcap has been detected on this system and cannot be removed because in use by another application. Please close all the WinPcap-based applications and run the installer again.”

Try rename these 2 files and re-run the installation again,

C:\Windows\SysWOW64>ren wpcap.dll wpcap.dll.old

C:\Windows\SysWOW64>ren packet.dll packet.dll.old

4.0.0.1040 shp     88,704 11-07-2007 packet.dll.old

4.0.0.1040 shp    240,248 11-07-2007 wpcap.dll.old

After successful installation,

4.1.0.2001 shp   96,784 – 06-26-2010 packet.dll

4.1.0.2001 shp    281,104 06-26-2010 wpcap.dll

      >> in the above matter .. i am really confused about the old name to rename it.. within these lines..
.. which two are the old name lines .. to rename..
why there are total six lines.. instead of four (two old and two new)

I will be highly thankful to your kind reply and the guidance..

I cited this blog post on Wireshark’s forum https://ask.wireshark.org/questions/9229/winpcap-will-not-install?page=1&focusedAnswerId=37410#37410 Note that in my solution I actually uninstalled the program that was running rather than simply renaming the dll file. I think it is better to do that so that you don’t have unnecessary junk cluttering up the disk and/or wasting cpu time.

I have been working on this for hours, and have computer glitches and issues (bleeping and minimizing screen for months)- finally renamed the files- because it wouldn’t install winpcap because a previous older version was on my computer. After renaming- it did install the newest version… but said there was an error and still will not install the driver. !!!!!! I still have heard the bleep but in the last 5 minutes has not minimized…. too tired for now to continue. How frustrating-
